Particle-Based Multi-scale and Multi-physics Computation with the MPM for Simulation-Based Engineering Science

Abstract

To effectively describe the multi-phase interactions within a multi-scale and multi-physics framework, a robust spatial discretiaztion method is a necessity. Over the last twenty years, the Material Point Method (MPM), which is a spatial discretization extension from Computational Fluid Dynamics to Computational Solid Dynamics, has evolved with applications to Simulation-Based Engineering Science (SBES), as well as the movie industry. Recently, a particle-based computer test-bed is being developed for multi-scale and multi-physics modeling and simulation of modern engineering problems, with a concurrent link between the Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) method and the MPM, and a hierarchical bridge from Molecular Dynamics (MD) to DPD. It appears that the DPD forces can be effectively coarse-grained using the MPM background grid, and that the concurrent link between the MPM and DPD enables near-seamless integration of constitutive modeling at the continuum level with force-based modeling at the mesoparticle level. Recent advances with representative examples and future research directions will be presented in the seminar to demonstrate the potential of SBES.
