Institutes of Biomechanics and Medical Engineering

As one of the earliest and famous research institution on biomechanics and medical engineering in China, Biomechanics Laboratory of Tsinghua University dated back to 1979. Institute of Biomechanics and Medical Engineering (IBME) was founded in 2006 with the purpose to the cutting-edge multidisciplinary research of biomechanics, Biomimetics, and medical engineering.

Biomechanics has been recognized as the most promising direction of theoretical and applied mechanics. IBME focuses not only on scientific mechanics problems in some crucial biological problems at different length scales but also emphasizes the clinical issues of major diseases. The main research directions of IBME include:

A. Multiscale mechanics and biomimetics of biological materials,

B. Mechanics of cells and biomacromolecules (e.g., DNA and protein),

C. Mechanics of soft matter and biological soft tissues, and

D. Medical engineering and applied biotechnologies.

IBME has been funded by some governmental funding agencies (e.g., the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology) and some national and international companies. Its researchers have produced many scientific works that are widely recognized internationally. IBME is striving to become a world-famous international center in both scientific discovery and technology innovation in biological and medical engineering.

IBME has established a systematic, flexible and high-level program for undergraduate, master and Ph.D students, with the purpose to produce students who have knowledge in theoretical and practical knowledge in the fields of biomechanics and medical engineering and make use of the knowledge to provide academic service to the society. Two graduate students have won the National Excellent Doctoral Thesis Award of China, and many have won the Excellent Doctoral/Master Thesis Award of Tsinghua University.
